This is my OLD Halo site, but I am too lazy to rework it for Halo 2, so instead I will just leave it as is, cuz most of it still applies. If I get time, I will update as appropriate. Then again, I might be busy kicking ass on XBOX LIVE!!!
I will be posting my tips and
hints for playing this freakin awesome game. Hopefully you
will also understand the difference between strategy and tactics
before this is over, as this will be required to finish
on Legendary
setting. Of course, mad Phat skills go a long ways as
well. Your best bet to pick these up is playing an online
first person shooter, my current favorite is Tactical
Ops, an Unreal Tournament mod. Playing
online will help even more, but only if you can get
it working, in which case, you probably don't have much to learn
here, as you are as big a geek as me.
The use of effective tactics and
strategies while playing
can add tremendously to the gameplay, and on the
Legendary difficulty setting, it just might be allow you to
finish the game without sacrificing too much of your life. I
suppose that instead of skills earned by experience, you might
just be naturally gifted, or maybe you have spent extensive time
being trained in the use of firearms (the real ones), either way
there might still be something here worth your time. If not,
please contact me ASAP for a full refund, as customer
satisfaction is strippernipple.coms top priority!
OK, so I will
start with the general stuff.
is like any other shooter game, you got to know how
to use the toys. The marine weapons are pretty much the same as
you might see if you joined me at the gun range. A nice pistol,
an assault rifle, a wicked shotgun, a sniper rifle, and of
course, a rocket launcher. Really not all that different from
what your average SEAL team packs. Sure, they are all improved a
small amount past what is available at you local gun show, but
not that much, so if you like something in the game, consider
getting one for yourself. Consider the shotgun for example: it is
the most popular weapon in the game, as well as the most popular
home defense weapon in real life; this is not a coincidence.
The covenant weapons on the other hand are quite unlike anything
the physics I was taught would allow, but damn they are fun. Many
folks will tell you that you need to use the covenant weapons to
defeat the covenant on legendary difficulty, but this isnt
always the case. Sometimes they can be quite useful (particularly
when you run out of ammo), but dont discount the marine
weapons even though they dont seem as advanced. I
wont spend too much time discussing how to use the
different weapons, instead I will point you to Bungies excellent multiplayer guide and halo.bungie.org. A few quick points though:
Pistol The pistol ROCKS!!! The accuracy and
lethality of this little gem mean that it was clearly produced by
Heckler and Koch. Use the zoom to put 1 bullet in the head of each
bad guy, then walk through the pile of bodies to steal their
wallets. Having problems with a banshee? Try to zoom in with the
pistol and you can tag them while they are far away turning
(watch for the spark to let you know you are hitting them). Some
of the bigger covenant will take more than one shot though, but
that is why you have
The
assault rifle! If you
have problems killing with this gem, they are probably too far
away, or you just may want too consider a career in diplomacy or
possibly flower arrangement. Just about anything will go down
with a full magazine from this bad boy, as long as you dont
let their shields recharge halfway through the magazine. For the
smaller dudes, short controlled bursts are the key, but if they
are in a crowd try sweeping from side to side.

Shotgun The shotgun
of course is your basic first person shooter death dealin tool.
God made the flood because of a large surplus of shotgun ammo
(just a theory, but it makes sense). Like the assault rifle, no
good for long range, but up close you are the man. Also, if you
are reloading and you see something that needs some holes in it,
just shoot, as unlike changing a magazine, you can fire the
shotgun midway through a reload (though, of course you always
keep it topped off, so this probably isnt an issue).

Sniper Rifle
. Oh my god. One shot, one kill, nuf
said
. Ok, more to say, I lied. Keep this gun at all costs.
Once you get one, never let it go. A great combo is the sniper
rifle and pistol. Zoom way in to spot with the sniper, then use
the pistol zoomed in to spank what you found. For general Close
Quarters Battles, the sniper rifle and shotgun are a nice set.
(BTW, that isn't really the gun from the game, it's my 50BMG
Windrunner from EDM Arms.)
Rocket Launcher
Good for large crowds, room clearing, or vehicles, but
less versatile than most guns. Usually if you find one there is a
good chance that you will have a use for it, but I often find
that it isnt worth lugging around if you have to choose
something to drop.
Concussion Grenade This is the only thing I am frugal with.
They are so amazing in close quarters, but there just arent
enough of them to use except when you get to real tight spots,
then they make all the difference. Their quick detonation time
takes different timing than the plasma grenades, but this can be
used to your advantage.
Plasma Grenade You almost never run out, so use these
babies when they can help. Of couse, best approach is sticking a
grenade right on a covenant. Takes aim and practice, but drops em
NOW. Of course, if there are more than about 4 covenant just
chillin together, stick a plasma grenade to one of them and he
will run around with the rest, making sure they don't escape. A
fun trick with the plasma grenades is throwing them at the
ceiling above things that must die, as plasma grenades only stick
to living stuff, and they don't bounce (this helps get the right
range).
Needler Once you master the needler it is tempting
to try to use if for everything. For most of the bigger dudes it
is about the easiest way to drop them if you can get them out in
the open. The homing aspect and longer range make it a great
choice for just about every critter. For the little pyramid
ewoks, a short burst of around 10 will drop them every time. A
longer burst should be swept through a crowd of them so they
don't all home on the same dude. For the bigger guys, the needler
is only good if they are in an area where they can't just jump
out of the way. Even in close quarters though, you can usually
find a good spot to unload. Sometimes the only good approach
though is to toss a grenade behind where they keep jumping, then
when they come out unload a full clip of needles on em.
Plasma Pistol The plasma pistol is a great gun, as long
as you always grab a fresh one when you get a chance. It is the
best (besides grenades) for dealing with the shits with shields.
Charge up a homing blast, take out his shield, then pop him a few
times with your alternate weapon. The homing charges are also
great for long distance kills of large groups, as you are bound
to hit someone. The stun aspect of the plasma guns is a nice
bonus that can help out, particularly if you switch targets to
keep them all stumbling.
Plasma Rifle I don't like the plasma rifle that much,
though sometimes it is good for clearing a hallway. If I am out
of ammo I will use it until I find something else, but honestly,
it is my least favorite weapon. If you do use it, use short
bursts and it will last longer and not overheat (leaving you
pretty much screwed). It isnt a bad gun really, I just
dont like its balance.
The vehicles are also weapons in
. I find that regardless of what the
marines may say, it is just as much fun to run them over as it is
to shoot em. After a grenade, the Warthog is the best way to
bitchslap a landing party of covenant as they deploy from a drop
ship. Just line up parallel to the exit doors and slide through
the crowd as they jump out.
If any of your passengers are getting low on health, drive them
somewhere safe and get them out by getting into the spot they are
in. Now jump back in the drivers seat and floor it to some fresh
replacements. Even better than a full team of healthy marines is
having a sniper in the passenger seat. The warthog then becomes a
mobile deathmobile.
